Maths: DMIC Subtraction Problems

 

This week for maths Room 1 has been practicing doing subtraction word problems, the questions on different slides came in 3 different difficulties, Easy, Middle and Hard, They were mostly easy, with some challenging questions but solvable.

Cybersmart Challenge 23: Scams and Phishing

 

Today in class we were doing Cybersmart Challenges and I chose to do Challenge 23. This task was about Scamming and Phishing, in the slides we were telling the difference between Legit and Fake emails, websites and Popups by analysing the image for legit or fake things

 In the close future, people in New Zealand will be able to see the first Partial Lunar Eclipse for the first time in 800 years in New Zealand, a Partial Lunar Eclipse only happens when a part of the Moon is within the Earth' Umbra behind the Earth, while a Total Lunar Eclipse happens when all of the Moon is in the Earth's Umbra, both cause the Moon to become a Bloodmoon which is when the Moon gets a faint red light because of the Earth covering the light to the moon, The Umbra of something is the area behind something that is the darkest part of the shadow while a the Penumbra of a object is the area of something that has a faint shadow that is lighter than the Umbra of something, A Partial Lunar Eclipse is much more common than a Total Lunar Eclipse as the Earth has to be exactly between the Moon and the Sun even though the last Partial Lunar Eclipse was in the year 1212 even though Total Lunar Eclipses happen about twice a year across the world, there are said to be 13 total or partial (Near-total) Lunar Eclipses in New Zealand across the span of 20 years, seven of those will be early in the morning, four will be seen in midnight, and only two will be in the evening one of those being the first one.

Term 4 Week 1, Maths: Two Way Probability Tables

 

For the first week of Term 4 at Pt England School we have been learning about Two Way Probability Tables, Two Way Probability Tables are used to sort different things in a Two Way Table to be able to find the Probability of something happening that is in the table.  

Tongan Language Week Explanation Writing

Malo’e’lelei, My name is Kalani and i’ll be telling you all about the exquisite islands of Tonga and about their diverse culture.

Tonga is one of the many countries in Polynesia, it is made up of over 170 islands within the entire kingdom with the largest island named Tongatapu which is home to the capital Nuku’alofa in the northern coast of the island. Nuku’alofa is also the most densely populated island in Tonga with a population of 74,611 as of 2016 of 101,133 as of 2016 also, the national language and culture is Tongan. The King of Tonga is King Tupou VI aged 62, Tonga is interestingly one of the very few countries that have never been invaded/colonised by another country in history, which led the monarchy to lead on ever since the islands were discovered by the Tongans which is still happening today with King Tupou VI.

Tonga is a country that is very creative with their favoured delicacies as such they have dishes such as Kapisi Pulu which is a popular dish across the islands which is created with corned beef, tomatoes, onions, and coconut cream, this dish is commonly eaten during special occasions. Tongans also like eating many other dishes that are also eaten across all of the pacific islands like Ota'ika which is very famous in Polynesia, Ota'ika is a dish of Raw Fish served in fresh coconut cream.

The Kingdom of Tonga is rich when it comes to their History. It is believed that Polynesians first immigrated to the islands of Tonga around 2,830 and 2,846 years ago, though it was only discovered by European explorers in 1616 by Dutch Explorers, Willem Schouten and Jacob Le Maire. Much before they discovered Tonga, The tongans in their early history created Megalithic Structures such as the Haʻamonga ʻa Maui or the Langi Terraced Tombs. The native wildlife of the Kingdom of Tonga was much different from around 3,000 years ago to now, back in the early days of Tonga there were many Large Flightless Birds and Lizards and many Birds capable of flying but there were no Livestock like what we eat today, there were no cattle, no pigs, no sheep, nothing that we are used to now in the modern timeline of Polynesia and the Kingdom of Tonga, Tonga also competed in WWI with a identified army of 91 soldiers fighting for Tonga.

As described above, the Kingdom of Tonga is a very special place in the Pacific that has a lot of meaning to it’s name and culture.

Maths: Confidence in Co-Ordinates

 

This week for our second of two tasks for this week we have been carrying on with learning about Co-Ordinates and using them on a real life map this time instead of a fictional map like on the previous task

This week for maths we have been learning about reading co-ordinates and how to solve problems with co-ordinates and vectors by navigating across a map and using co-ordinates to get to the final point of the problem and solve all of the problems

Maths: Introduction to Algebra

 

This week for maths we were learning about algebra. for our first maths task of the week we were doing a kind of introduction to algebra by learning how to understand algebra and use it 

Maths: Line Graphs and Understanding Them

 

For this week, Room 1 and I have been learning about Line Graphs and how they work. For this task we have been learning how to understand graphs and making graphs, first we were investigating different graphs to find out what they mean and the differences between certain things in a line graph. 

Emma Twigg: Inference/Evaluation

 

This week for our Reading task my group has been learning about Emma Twigg, a New Zealand Single Sculls World Champion. We have been learning about her personal life and her journey to becoming an Olympic World Champion in Single Sculls  

Ancient Olympics:Room 1

This week for my rooms first module we were learning about the Ancient Olympics and the differences between the Ancient Olympics and the Modern Olympics, In the Ancient Olympics there were much less sports, most of the years there were only sprints with and without armour, the Ancient Olympics also created and introduced the Discus and the sport, in the Modern Olympics they re-added most of the sports from the Ancient Olympics while also adding many more, in the Ancient Olympics, the Olympics were 3 days, but extended to 5 days in 5th century B.C but in the Modern Olympics they were extended to 2 weeks

 

Dame Valerie Adams

Dame Valerie Adams is a two time Olympic, three time Commonwealth Games Champion, She won a Gold Medal at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, United Kingdom after the champion who got the gold medal Nadzeya Astapchuk was disqualified for doping after she failed the drug test, then continued to win a silver medal in 2016 and a Bronze Medal in the 2020(2021) Tokyo Olympics.

Kalani Measurement: Introduction to Time.

 

Our first maths activity this week was based on the measurement of time and an introduction to time. As I already knew much about time I flew through this task very fast and it was surprisingly easy as there were only basic problems 

Speech: Healthy Lunches Matter.

 Yesterday we were presenting our speeches and finishing them off, I was a bit nervous about presenting my speech but I managed to do my speech and this was what it turned out like.

Kia Ora my name is Kalani and this is my speech about Healthy Lunches.

As much as you want to bring & eat foods at school like, Macca’s, KFC, Chocolaté, Bakery food, and other sweet and tasty things, they aren’t actually great when it comes to the nutritional value of those fatty and sugary foods, but there are other foods that are healthy and full of nutrition that you should pack your lunch with more often.

There are foods like Fiber Bars, Muesli Bars, Fruit/Vegetables and a Healthy Sandwich but try to make your own sandwich as store bought sandwiches are not always as healthy as your own. You can also fill your lunchbox with snacks like, Lesnak, Snack-Sized Chip Packets, 2-3 Small Biscuits, and any other suitable snacks that are low in fat & sugar but still minimize intake of these snacks as they don’t have the best nutrition but aren’t as bad as the ones mentioned at the top

Try to avoid foods that are high in fat and sugar and eat more of the foods that are mentioned above at school as you are put at risk of diseases like diabetes, and blood clotting.

Kalani: Area and Perimeter of a House

 

For maths this week we have been working out the Area and Perimeter of certain items and this time we were working out the Area and Perimeter of a House, To work out the perimeter you add all the numbers that make up the outside of the object and to work out the area you multiply the length by the width on a 2d Shape

On Thursday, the year 8's had their rotations while the year 7's were at Tamaki College for Tech and for Te Reo we did a slide show based on going places, asking why, and answering why so we could use these words ourselves

The Jacket Part One

 

For this and last week we have been reading a chapter book called the jacket which is a book with the main characters being a guy named Phil and a guy named Daniel in a bit of an argument between a jacket with Daniel's jacket looking similar to Phil's brothers jacket 

The Seasons and The Climate Zones Week 5

 

For our inquiry/science Team 5 have been learning about the seasons and the climate zones and how it all effects the earth, it there is also note taking from the first video that we did as a group together in our class

 This week for our 2nd Manaiakalani Cybersmart Challenge for today we were learning how to use the tools in Google Draw, I prefer to use polyline as it's easier to use and better to not make mistakes
